"Reverse anatomy - building body parts instead of cutting them up"
| Date: | 5:30pm, Wednesday 6th September 2000 |
| Venue: | SG15 Hone Lecture Theatre
Ground Floor, Medical Building South University of Adelaide, Frome Rd. |
| Speaker: | Prof. Maciej Henneberg
Department of Anatomical Sciences University of Adelaide |
Abstract: Traditionally anatomists cut human bodies
apart to study their structure, while armour was tested on battlefields.
The "Human Surrogate" project initiated by DSTO is a cooperative exercise
involving Departments of Anatomical Sciences and Orthopaedics, Craniofacial
Unit, Wingate Laboratories and a number of other collaborators. Using knowledge
of the normal anatomy of the human body and the knowledge of ranges of
anthropometric variation, through 3-D CT scanning, laser sintering and
casting, we build parts of the body that not only look and feel like the
real thing, but also respond to trauma in the same way as the real body.
This allows testing of a variety of devices that protect human body against
battlefield, industrial and road injuries. A number of lower limbs manufactured
by us were already used for testing footwear protecting against landmine
injuries.
Resume: Prof. Henneberg is the Foundation Wood Jones Professor of Anthropological & Comparative Anatomy and Head of the Department of Anatomical Sciences. He is President, Australasian Society for Human Biology; Managing Editor, Journal of Comparative Human Biology, HOMO; CEO of "SOMA" Medical and Scientific Anatomy Services trading through Luminis Ltd. He has held positions at a number of universities including: the Jagiellonian University, Poland; University of Texas, USA; University of Cape Town, South Africa and Oxford University, UK.
All welcome. Free wine, cheese and refreshments.
