Abstract: The focus of CSIRO Manufacturing Science and Technology Division is on supporting Australian industry through the development and exploitation of innovative materials, processes, products and services. The development of microjoining technology is allowing the manufacture of increasingly smaller and sophisticated products. These devices often incorporate combinations of electronics, sensors, and micro-mechanical parts. Future trends are for reduced size, increased functionability, and lower cost. These developments have only been made through advances in the materials and joining technology development. In the medical industry welded assemblies are being used for both surgical tools and long term implants. New developments will allow more sophisticated and smarter systems in such areas as pacemakers, automated diagnostic systems, drug delivery systems, and implanted hearing aids.

Resumes: (1) Ian Dick completed the BE degree at Adelaide University in 1969 and Masters in 1998. He then joined Philips Hendon as an engineer in the Radio Laboratory. In 1971, Ian joined CSIRO Chemical Physics at Clayton as an Experimental Officer in the Electronics Laboratory. In 1978 he lead the Electronics Laboratory at CSIRO Materials Science, Adelaide. Ian is currently a Project Leader in the fields of TIG welding, in aluminium and stainless steel, microjoining, process technology and automation. (2) Simon Doe obtianed his B.Sc. in Metallurgy and Materials Science at Nottingham University, England in 1988.  Simon worked at the UK's Atomic Weapons Establishment, until 2000 when he joined CSIRO Manufacturing Science and Technology, Adelaide, in the Advanced Joining Processes Group.
