Optical and Digital Probes of Cell Physiology

Date: 12.00 pm, Thursday 26th April 2001
Venue: Physiology Seminar
Room 5th Floor, Medical Building South
University of Adelaide, Frome Rd.
Speaker: Professor Leslie M. Loew
Centre for Biomedical Imaging Technology
University of Connecticut, USA

Special Joint Seminar with Department of Physiology

Abstract:  This lecture will provide a survey of several new technologies for live cell physiology. These include (a) optical mapping of membrane electrical activity along a cell surface with new potentiometric dyes (b) high resolution probing of cell physiology with second harmonic imaging microscopy (c) quantitative intracellular concentrations via digital convolutional analysis of confocal images (d) the Virtual Cell – a computational environment for spatial modeling of cell biology.

Resume: Leslie Loew is the Director of the Center for Biomedical Imaging Technology at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He received a B.S. City College of CUNY, Chemistry, 1969, M.S. Cornell University, Chemistry, 1972, Ph.D. Cornell University, Chemistry, 1974. In 1974 he did a post-doctoral stint at Harvard University. He has received both the Nehemiah Gittelson Medal and the NIH Research Career Development Award, 1980-85.
