Photosynthetic Reaction Centres: Structure Function Studies

Date: 1:00pm, Monday, 13th August 2001
Venue: G09 Benham Theatre
Ground Floor, Benham Building
Dept. Env. Biology, University of Adelaide.
Speaker: Dr. A.W. Rutherford
Commissariat Energie a Atomique (CEA)
Saclay France

Abstract:  This talk will touch on biophysical and spectroscopic methods for study of electron transfer, particularly photosynthetic electron transfer, using EPR, laser flash absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence, thermoluminescence, etc techniques. Structure-function of electron transfer proteins, metalloproteins, radical proteins and particularly photosynthetic reaction centres, oxygen evolving enzyme will be discussed, as well as the  biophysics of oxidative stress.

Resume:  Dr. Bill Rutherford obtained his BSc in Biochemistry at Univ. Liverpool and his PhD in Microbiology (Biophysics) at University College London, 1979. His PhD was in the area of bacterial photosynth. reaction centres, EPR and redox potentiometry. He held a postdoc position at the Dept. of Biophysics, University of Illinois, USA, for two years working on plant reaction centres and cytochrome bcRieske complex, EPR and optical methods. He was Visiting Foreign Specialist at the  Solar Energy Group, RIKEN, Saitama, Japan, working in the areas of oxygen evolution and electron transfer in plants using thermoluminescence, luminescence and oxygen electrodes. He then held a number of CNRS/CEA, France, positions and he is now Head of Service Bioenergetics at CEA, Saclay, France.
