"An Interdisciplinary Approach to Pain Research"

Date: 5:30pm, Wednesday 11th April 2001
Venue: SG15 Hone Lecture Theatre
Ground Floor, Medical Building South
University of Adelaide, Frome Rd.
Speaker: Associate Professor Peter Svensson,
Centre for Sensory-Motor Interaction,
Aalborg University

Abstract:  Chronic pain conditions, particularly in the musculoskeletal system, are very common in the population but unfortunately the etiology and pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. The pain problem can be addressed from the level of molecular biology and up to behavioral and psychosocial models of pain. In the seminar, examples of recent interdisciplinary studies will be provided to illustrate the interaction between basic, animal trials; human experimental pain models and studies on clinical pain patients. The ultimate goal is to facilitate a correct diagnosis and provide a rationale for prevention and treatment of pain.

Resume:  Peter Svensson is currently associate professor at Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction, Aalborg University where he heads the Orofacial Pain Laboratory. Furthermore, he is a clinical associate professor at the Dental School, Aarhus University and clinical consultant on orofacial pain problems at Aalborg Hospital.  He graduated from the Dental School in Aarhus in 1987 (D.D.S.) and spent 3 years in private dental practice before returning to the Ph.D. program at the Dental School in 1990 where he defended his Ph.D. thesis on techniques to evaluate trigeminal pain in 1993. In 1997 he was appointed associate professor at Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction. In 2000 a thesis for the Danish Doctor´s Degree (Dr. Odont) was defended at the Faculty of Health Science, Aarhus University.  He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, 13 reviews and 10 book chapters, 90 abstracts; mostly in the field of orofacial pain physiology. He has given more than 50 lectures and presentations at national and international meetings. He is regularly referee for 9 different neuroscience/pain journals/oral physiology.    He received the Danish Dental Association Research Prize for young scientists in 1995, the Strathman Research Prize in 1998, and the Zendium-Hagendorn Research Prize in 2000.
