Intimacy Between Orthopaedics and Biomedical Engineering
'Not so Strange Bed Fellows'

Date: 5.30 pm, 8th May Wednesday,  2002
Venue: SG15 Hone Lecture Theatre,
Ground Floor, Medical Building South
Adelaide University, Frome Road
Speaker Professor Jegan Krishnan
Flinders University

Abstract: This talk will cite current clinical examples of orthopaedic problems that have received engineering solutions. New orthopaedic developments will be demonstrated – and, in particular, future evolution in the relationship between orthopaedics and biomedical engineering will be discussed. Issues ranging from software engineering to tissue engineering through to biomaterials will be covered.

Resume: Professor Jegan Krishnan, was appointed as the inaugural Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at Flinders University Faculty of Health Sciences in May 2001, following being Head of the Department of Orthopaedics since 1995. Following his post graduation as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in 1992, he spent 2 years overseas visiting research centres throughout UK, Europe, and USA gaining valuable research experience.

His research interest lies in the development of a metacarpophalangeal joint for the rheumatoid hand and a prototype has been developed and clinical trials should proceed within the next six months.

In 2000 he was awarded the American British Canadian (ABC) Orthopaedic Fellowship and spent two months with colleagues from several other countries presenting papers and touring Orthopaedic Centres throughout America and Canada.
