FOR NEW INFORMATION

The microwave radar group is pleased to announce the following activities

*      Shane Cloude is organising a special invited session on Polarimetric Radar Interferometry at the forthcoming IEEE IGARSS symposium to be held in Seoul, Korea, July 25-29, 2005

*      We welcome Romeo Fomena from the University of Rennes, France. Romeo is undertaking a 6 month Masters project here with us on the topic of coherence optimisation in radar interferometry.

*      Shane Cloude has been invited to give an opening plenary talk to the European Space Agency (ESA) at the POLInSAR workshop to be held in Frascati, Italy, January 2005 (see link below for more information). The talk will give an overview of the status of this new technology and its applications in remote sensing and surveillance.

*      University of Adelaide have been appointed Principal Investigators (PI) on the Tandem-X Phase 1 mission study. This dual satellite X-band radar project is directed by the German Space Agency DLR in collaboration with German industry and is aimed at producing global topographic maps of very high resolution. This sensor would open up hundreds of new applications of radar remote sensing from space and we are working in collaboration with DSTO to develop those applications most related to AustraliaÕs remote sensing requirements.

*      We are pleased to become an official member of the ALOS/PALSAR International Calibration and Validation team. In this capacity they will take part in polarimetric phase calibration of the new L band Phased Array SAR System to be launched by JAXA in 2005.

*      We organised a successful 1 Ðday workshop on Radar Remote Sensing activities in South Australia. The workshop took place at the University of Adelaide on 27th October 2004

*      Shane Cloude has been appointed Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing

*      We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Zheng Shu Zhou as a postdoctoral research fellow in radar imaging technology..Dr Zhou is expected to take up appointment in January 2005.

Current Projects:

* ALOS-PALSAR POLInSAR Consortium

The radar group are principle investigators (PI) on a research project involving satellite radar observation of land surfaces. The Japanese space agency JAXA will launchthe radar PALSAR on board the advanced land observation satellite ALOS in 2005.This satellite will have three remote sensing instruments: the Panchromatic Remote-Sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping  (PRISM) for generating Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), the Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type 2 (AVNIR-2) for multispectral land coverage observation, and the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) for 24-hour all weather land observation.

The POLInSAR consortium comprises both EEE and The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Adelaide together with The University of Edinburgh and Macaulay Institute in Scotland.  Together they are studying new radar techniques for the use of space based remote sensing for large area forest mapping applications. Three special test sites are being used to develop and validate inversion models : Glen Affric in Scotland, Adelaide in South Australia and Belize in the Caribbean.

* European Space Agency (ESA-ESRIN,ESA-ESTEC)

we are currently working as part of the following ESA consortia:

  1. POLSARPro - Development of a Polarimetric SAR Image Analysis Tool. we are members of a consortium lead by the University of Rennes, France. This contract concerns the development of free software tools to analyse polarimetric and interferometric radar data from a wide range of different air and space borne imaging sensors

  1. POLInSAR Mission and Application Study. we are members of a consortium lead by DLR in Germany. This study is aimed at assessing the feasibility of a mission combining polarimetry with interferometry in a space borne satellite sensor for quantitative applications in forestry, agriculture and ice sensing.

  1. DRAGON. This Chinese-European collaborative program is aimed at sharing expertise in radar remote sensing. we are principal Investigators (PI) on a program in Polarimetric SAR Interferometry with partners DLR, Germany, the University of Rennes, France and the Chinese Academies of Forestry and Science, Institute of Forest Resources Information Techniques and Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA)

  1. ENVISAT/ASAR : we are leading a consortium comprising DSTO, Australia, the University of Aberystwyth, UK, the University of Oregon, USA and NASA-JPL, California. The aim of this project is to develop techniques for combating temporal decorrelation through the use of the alternating polarisation (AP) mode of ASAR for repeat pass interferometry over a calibrated forest test site in Injune, Queensland, Australia.
