Aims

Principles of multimedia coding including JPEG, JPEG-2000, MPEG and MP3.  Lossless compression, video motion estimation, object-oriented multimedia, digital rights management, metadata

Primer on 2G cellular systems (GSM and CDMA)

Third generation mobile systems:  W-CDMA implementation and dimensioning, radio resource management and future evolution; core network evolution; QoS on IP

Satellite communications: principles and applications

Outcomes

After completion of this course, students will have a broad understanding of

  • Coding schemes, standards and systems for multimedia communication
  • Third Generation mobile communication technologies
  • Other advanced wireless telecommunications systems

Previous Studies

ELEC ENG 4046 Telecommunications IV or equivalent

 

Delivery Methods

36 hours of lectures and tutorials

 

Assessment: 

3 assignments, two worth 5% of final grade; major assignment worth 15%.  All assignments must be submitted to qualify for this course.

10 weekly homeworks, each worth 1.5% of the final grade.  At least 6 homeworks must be submitted to qualify for this course.

Written Exam (3 hours) consisting of six questions (60%).  A minimum exam mark of 50% (60/120) and an overall mark of 50% or higher is required to meet the requirements of this course.

COURSE OUTLINE :  7044 MULTIMEDIA COMMUNICATIONS

12 Lectures, each 3 hours and consisting of four parts:

  • Two 45-minute lectures
  • One 10-minute tutorial
  • Additional 50 minute lecture

    • Image Compression + Lossless Compression
    • Video Compression + Motion Estimation
    • Audio Compression + Digital Rights Management
    • Voice over IP + Introduction to GSM
    • 2.5G Network Evolution + Introduction to CDMA
    • Principles of  3G and WCDMA + JPEG-2000  
    • 3G Implementation and Planning + Object Oriented Multimedia  
    • Radio Resource Management + Metadata
    • Capacity Enhancement + Core Network Evolution
    • Satellite Communications + QoS on IP
    • Network Sharing + Discussion of Major Assignment
    • Revision tutorial (in week 13)

Lectures are on Friday afternoon 2:10pm-5pm in the Chapman Lecture Theatre, N158 in Engineering North.  The first lecture is on July 28.
