Determining
your machine name:
To be able to resolve
your request quickly, Computer Support Staff need to know the
name of the machine you are experiencing the problem with. This
is particularly important when you work in a room with multiple
computers, such as computer or research laboratories, where
identifying a specific user's machine may be difficult. Many
problems can be resolved remotely, but this cannot be done without
knowing the machine name.
Machines may have one
or two numbers on the front of the case:
- All machines should have an 'EE' number (black text on a
white sticker) with 'EE' followed by 6 digits, however this
is NOT the number required, so please DO NOT supply this number.
- Newer machines should have another number appended to the
front of the case (black text on a clear background). Part
of this number often contains either the room the machine
is housed in (e.g. EM211-10 - computer number 10 in room EM211),
or an abbreviation for the machine's use (e.g. PROJ12 - student
PROJect machine number 12). This IS the number required for
the 'Machine Name' field.
If your machine does not have a machine name appended to the front
of the case, you can determine this number by the following procedure:
Windows 2000 On the desktop,
or in Windows Explorer, right-click 'My Computer', then click
'Properties', 'Network Identification'. Enter the 'Full computer
name' up to the .eleceng.adelaide.edu.au. For example, 'Full
computer name' may read 'EM211-10.eleceng.adelaide.edu.au'.
You need to enter 'EM211-10'. Windows XP On the desktop, or
in Windows Explorer, right-click 'My Computer', then click 'Properties',
'Computer Name'. Enter the 'Full computer name' up to the .eleceng.adelaide.edu.au.
For example, 'Full computer name' may read 'EM211-10.eleceng.adelaide.edu.au'.
You need to enter 'EM211-10'. Windows NT On the desktop, or
in Windows Explorer, right-click 'Network Neighbourhood'. The
'Identification' tab has the field 'Computer Name' - enter this
number. Similar procedures apply for Windows 95, 98 and Me.
If you are still unable
to determine your machine name, or use a different operating
system (Linux, Solaris, Mac) and don't know your machine name,
type 'Unknown' in the 'Machine Name' box.
