Syed Imranul Islam – Fuzzy functional observer and its application as fuzzy controller for nonlinear systems with time delay and model uncertainty

Functional observer (FO) is an important research topic for its widespread application in many industrial processes. It has received intensive research interest over the last few decades for its ability of estimating function of states of linear systems in single step rather than doing it in two steps, i.e. estimation of states and calculation of required function of states. In addition, it inherently reduces the order of the observer. Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model, on the other hand, is an efficient mathematical tool which can represent highly nonlinear system as a bunch of linear models connected by nonlinear membership functions. This talk will present some results on existence and stability conditions of FO for nonlinear systems represented by T-S fuzzy model, and its application as parallel distributed compensation (PDC) controller to stabilize the system. Stability conditions are in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMI), such that observer can be constructed solving the LMIs. Time-delay and model uncertainty have also been investigated to observer the impact on the stability of the observer and the system.
Mr. Syed Imranul Islam received his B. Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), and M.Sc. in EEE from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1999 and 2010 respectively. He also received Master of Business Administration from University of Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2012. Currently he is pursuing his PhD studies in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Adelaide, Australia. His research interests include functional observer, fuzzy control system and power systems.
